Founded in 1967 in a Cambridge pub by a law lecturer at Pembroke College and members of the local Caribbean community, CWICC quickly became a formidable presence in the city’s cricketing landscape. At a time when Cambridge’s Caribbean population numbered just 400, the club offered far more than sport: it became a powerful symbol of identity, unity, and pride.
Playing with flair, spirit, and purpose, CWICC competed in the Cambridgeshire Cricket Association League and secured rare opportunities to face Cambridge University college teams. The club also forged strong local ties through annual matches against the police, while its home ground on Parker’s Piece became a vibrant gathering place for families and supporters. In doing so, the club not only enriched the city’s sporting life but also strengthened community bonds and reshaped perceptions.
Now, more than 50 years on, the story of CWICC is being brought to the screen by those who lived it. Directed by Lucy Gordon and produced by Ruby Gordon, this short film draws on original interviews with former players, including Albert Gordon, Desmond Cuffy, Graham Rhodes, and Jerry Lewis.
This pilot screening of initial interviews offers a rare opportunity to hear first-hand reflections on the club’s legacy and its role in shaping Cambridge’s community life.
Audience members can expect an evening of history, sport, and celebration, offering a rare opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from the players who helped build the club and its legacy.
The screening promises to be both a reflection on the past and a celebration of a community whose influence continues to shape Cambridge today.
